East Weatogue first came to my awareness when Sha told me about a cider mill, I mean a wine vineyard, she was visiting. I thought it sounded beautiful, but where the heck is E. Weatogue? Scanning my memory of the landscape, there is a mountain... a road.... and then Tarrifville.... where the heck can this litte village be?

The irony is I have been driving past E. Weatogue Road every day for a year now. Friday on my way to work, the East Weatogue Road sign flashed at me in the rearview mirror, catching my attention. I wondered if it was more than just a (road) sign. What did I need to know about this place?

I though of Sha. And I thought of Steve. But soon enough I was distracted, thinking about work. Yet, something about E. Weatogue has been floating around in my mind. In fact it has been circling all of us."

A friend gave me a gift of a sample of the Red Zinfandel variety from Rosedale Farms in East Weatogue. While it lacked the full-bodied flavor of a typical Cabernet, or the smoothness of reds such as Syrah and Brunello's seen here, it was a bit sweeter, and generally speaking a great gift for anyone who explores local wines. Good deal for a first year wine. I don't know the age of the vines they brought in last year for zin. Their website might have more. I also enjoyed the Three Sisters, reisling style sweet white.

Location_Description: Yard with flythrough, high on a hill, near the CT shoreline. Large platform feeder, and four smaller ones.

Behavior: I have been trying to feed one crow who has come to watch my feeders for several weeks, now. I have been putting out dogfood, and bits of meat. He finally started landing on my feeder several days ago, first just in the early morning, and in the past three days, at various times during the day, and evening. Today, he was viciously attacked by four Bluejays who are regulars to my feeders. I hope the Crow is not permanently scared off. He still remains a 'single' Crow, with none others in sight. He seems very, very timid..even movement in the house scares him off. Is this normal behaviour.? Is it possible to feed Crows along with other birds? I wonder why the Jays were intimidated by the Crow. They seem to get along with all the Grackles that I feed. ( Linda Barrett)"

East Weatogue has been flooded for days. Maybe after yesterday's 702 degree spring day, things have sufficiently receeded. Earlier this week however, the Pinch. Sycamore was up to it's branch-pits in water.

I am told that there is a school in East Weatogue, perhaps affiliated with the notable Talcott Mountain Science Center. I am told that two very bright kids go there. If these are the same kids I heard rumored, they have been known to fly hovercraft, build dinosaurs, build fleets of ships, and continually impress their equally special Dad with their sensitivity, consideration, thoughtfulness, and bright love!

It was raining the day I found it hiding behind that elegant, huge, Pinchot Sycamore that for years had enticed me upon regular visits to the area to visit my "other half."

My other half, with blatant disregard for the shared soul tissues and heart synapses forgot his promises to bring me back home here from China - but his own heart continued to beat with my electricity and therefore, it is not surprising at all that I was brought to this enchanted place three years later.

Albeit a bit stunned and unsettled.

My home oddly enough was within a mile or two from that tree that I always wanted to get out of the car and feel and climb and hug but he would never allow it. They light the magnificent tree up at night. It is an important fixture, that tree - in the Connecticut tradition of pride of ownership of "the oldest, the biggest and the best," this tree stands illuminated and enshrined for all who pass. Each day, I too would pass it and go the other direction to my office.

Until the rainy day. That day was too much. I needed to not pass my usual direction because of road construction. So I ventured on the road behind the tree.

Into the heart of America. East Weatogue!

What a balm of healing on a teary rainy day where a lady's fine heart who is not yet healed seeks to find a new reason to love her new home. A listening and seeking heart knows what it is doing. It is best to be obeyed, and followed... and so I continued on to the most amazing stretch of perfect New England road, tastefully decorated with split rail fences, old red barns, and white farmhouses. A friend of mine in Simsbury said "Char, never say farmhouse. Say "estate." I asked why and she said people don't like to buy "farmhouses," but they will by an "estate." She is in real estate.

I do not want an estate. I would like a farmhouse.

Perfectly positioned half visible through the haze coming off the mountain, with a lone seagull circling over the field, is a sign "East Weatogue Historical District."

"Holy cow," I thought. History. And Beauty.

I pulled over and got out at a small barn which sells New England like things. Apples, pies, cheese, fruit and flowers. I talked to the woman about East Weatogue. I talked to her about this magical place that I did not know was even until this day. Odd how 300 plus years of history can be in your front yard on the opposite side of the river and you never know it.

We looked at rainy vineyards. A winery is coming... next year, she says. I look at the fields and remember the same field in China. Very similar. It even smells the same. How many people know that China grows grapes? Probably not many.

East Weatogue has my heart and soul. So does the ocean. So does this entire state.

I am welcomed home here, by wayward seagulls, red barns, home make pies and vineyards, rainy mornings off the mountain, fields of pumpkins, pottery and a river that all runs through it. I am welcomed to New England.

Again.

And slowly my parts return to me that were missing from years ago. And I make it a practice to hug the tree.

The morning sun is late in driving away the mountain shadows, but the wide westward vista lengthens out the day with glowing sunsets. Here the Hartford road winds over the mountain. From the summit of the last steep descent, the song of turbulent waters will fall upon the ear. Would you enjoy one of the daintiest bits of scenery; swing down the deep ravine and follow the laughing cascades through the gloom of the rock-walled canon."

Having discovered the idea of writing The Adventures of East Weatogue, I quickly began to appreciate the potential channel for creative journaling and actual adventuring both. I decided to take up my friend's offer to go journey up a mountain today, because, in part, I knew she owuld want to go up the mountain that sits across the way from East Weatogue! May the adventures begin!!

For starters the road was closed down for the season, so like a hundred other adventurers on New Year's Day, the hike started early as couples, families, hikers and their dogs all got a warm up on the winding road to the heli-pad. We were a little embarrassed at the lack of a level of fitness we had obtained by 6 months practice in front of a computer. Volleyball or not, armchair fitness just doesn't get the heart and lungs going like a good hike up the mountain.

It was windy up the shaded face of the mountain, but once we hit the sunny plateaus over looking the rolling hills of the Farmington Valley, we were able to relax and enjoy the view. A hawk graced us. We saw a woman trying out her new Christmas video camera. One teenager's ultrawhite sneakers were as mud-covered as her flair jeans. Sha recounted tales of young women in China hiking the windy mountains in their high-heels and I had to chuckle.

As we examined some straighted cliff rock formations and podered whether they were made by volcanic activity or glacial (decidedly glacial in Connecticut), Sha discovered her initials carved on a rock!

On the way back, we heard the Horn of Gondor and I began to wonder if caped rangers would emerge from the woods with elven bows and arrows. A little prompting and the 6th grader sporting the New Year's eve souvenier repeated the call "of gondor" Thanks, kid!

Just then along came a few girls and their moms with a big floppy looking dog. It was approximately beige in color and vaguely resembled a sheepdog. I overheard the fourteen year old tell her friend (for our benefit) it was a Labradoodle! A mom looked at us and said "Labradoodle, heh, it's a big mutt!"

Personally, I preferred Labradoodle!
